Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. This megacity is located on the bank of the river Buriganga. It is the 9th largest city in the world. Dhaka is renowned for producing the world's finest muslin. Today it serves as one of the prime centres of culture, education and business in the region.

Prof. Hermann Gmeiner, founder President of SOS-Kinderdorf International visited newly emerged Bangladesh in 1972 along with his assistant Mr. Helmut Kutin, present President of SOS Children's Villages International, immediately after the war of liberation with the proposal of establishing SOS Children's Villages in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh government welcomed Prof. Hermann Gmeiner's proposal and signed an agreement with the organization on 17th May 1972. In the same year, SOS Children's Village Dhaka was established on 2.54 acres of land at Shamoli Dhaka.First group of mothers and children arrived and started their SOS family life on 31st August 1972. The Village was formally opened by the then President of the People's Rebuplic of Bangladesh - Mohammad Ullah on 10th February 1974.

SOS Children's Village Dhaka is formed with 15 family houses. The houses are divided into three wings. Each wing consists of 5 houses and each house contains 8 to 10 children - boys and girls of different ages. Each family is being cared for by a trained mother. The mother leads her family according to professional child-care standards and receives the required support from the village director and other co-workers to ensure that the children's needs are met and their rights respected.

The Village is well equipped with social amenities and educational facilities through which children are having experience of happy childhood. Children get experience of happy childhood here and go forward towards self-reliance to become successful and contributing members of the society.

SOS Youth Village Dhaka was established on 1.45 acres of land at Section-13, Block-A, Mirpur Housing Estate, Dhaka in the year 1985. After completion of a certain age, the boys from SOS Children's Village Dhaka move to this Youth Village for their further development and preparation for independent life.

Youth Village programmes offer learning and growth opportunities for the youngsters. The boys do their own works and take care of themselves. To build up leadership quality, the boys are mobilized in different ways. Boys are encouraged to recognize their own problems and shortcomings and by sharing experiences they try to find out the solution for minimizing problems. They take part in the decision making for their day to day improvement.

SOS Vocational Training Centre Dhaka was established in 1988 to provide vocational training to the particular target group of school drop-out youths of the society and SOS youth. The centre is accredited by the Bangladesh Technical Education Board.

The general objective of the centre is to provide drop-outs and unemployed youth of poor families with practical skills for employment. In total 180 boys can receive training here on different trade courses on regular basis. Students are provided with free of cost training and a certain amount of monthly allowance is also provided to help them to meet up the expenses for food, accommodation and other expenses. The trade courses are - two years Electrical, Machinist, Electronics and Automobile courses and 1 year Carpentry course.

Maximum graduated students of the training centre have found employment in the job market either in the country or abroad. Some of them have already established their own business and offer services to the people.

The SOS Hermann Gmeiner College Dhaka is a co-educational Bengali medium college affiliated to the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka. The college was established in the year 1986 at Section-13, Mirpur Housing Estate, Dhaka. It has strength of 1100 students, from Preparatory class to Class-XII. Besides encouraging participatory, interactive and experimental competitions the college encourages discussions, role-plays and group work. Our students won numerous prizes at local as well as district and national levels in extra-curricular activities. The college has been recognized as one of the best educational institutions of Bangladesh.
